Lorem Ipsum: History, Uses, and How to Generate It Free
A practical guide to Lorem Ipsum placeholder text — where it comes from, when to use it, and how to generate custom paragraphs instantly for free.
If you’ve ever opened a design mockup and seen blocks of Latin-looking text starting with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…”, you’ve encountered placeholder text. It shows up in wireframes, brochure templates, email newsletters, printed catalogs — basically anywhere a layout needs to look populated before the real copy exists.
Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
It originates from a work by the Roman statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero: De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), written around 45 BC. A passage beginning “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…” was scrambled, shortened, and spliced with other sections to create something that looks like Latin but doesn’t actually say anything coherent.
The scrambled version first appeared in print in the 1500s, when an unknown printer used it to fill a specimen book. Letraset dry-transfer sheets brought it back in the 1960s, and PageMaker — one of the first desktop publishing apps — shipped with it as default filler in the 1980s. It’s been the standard ever since.
Why designers use placeholder text
The main reason is practical: when reviewing a layout, you want people to look at fonts, spacing, and visual hierarchy, not the words. Real content from another page is worse than Lorem Ipsum — reviewers start fact-checking or copy-editing instead of evaluating the design.
There’s also a less obvious reason. Lorem Ipsum has a realistic distribution of letter frequencies and word lengths for a Latin-origin language. It fills text boxes more naturally than something like “Insert text here” repeated twelve times, because word lengths vary and lines wrap differently.
When to use it — and when not to
Good uses:
- Initial wireframes before copy is written
- Template marketing materials (brochures, slide decks)
- Testing responsive layouts or print bleed areas
- Filling database fields for load testing
Cases where it breaks down:
- Presenting to a client who may not recognise it — use clearly labelled placeholder boxes instead
- Designs for Chinese, Arabic, or other scripts with very different character widths — Lorem Ipsum won’t reflect actual text density
- Layouts where line breaks matter — they’ll shift when real copy goes in
How many paragraphs do you actually need?
Here’s a rough guide:
- 1 paragraph — a card body, a tooltip, a short intro block
- 3 paragraphs — a typical article section or email body
- 5–10 paragraphs — a full page of body text for layout testing
- 15–20 paragraphs — a long-form document or scroll stress test
Generating it
The Lorem Ipsum Generator lets you choose the number of paragraphs (1–20), the paragraph length (short, medium, or long), and whether to start with the classic opening sentence or use fully random Latin.
Every click produces a different set of sentences — you’re never getting the same block twice. The word count updates automatically, and one click copies everything to your clipboard.
