How it works
- 1 Start the camera Click 'Start webcam test' and allow camera access when the browser asks. The permission prompt appears near the address bar.
- 2 Check the preview and readings You should see yourself in the preview within a second or two. The panel below shows which camera is active, its resolution, aspect ratio, and how many frames per second it is actually delivering.
- 3 Take a snapshot, then stop Press 'Take snapshot' to freeze a frame and download it as a PNG. When you are done, click 'Stop test' — the camera indicator light should switch off.

Frequently asked questions
- Is my video recorded or uploaded anywhere?
- No. The camera stream is rendered directly into the page and never leaves your device. Snapshots are drawn on a canvas in your browser's memory and are only saved if you click download. Nothing is sent to any server, and closing the tab discards everything.
- The preview is black — what should I check?
- Start with the physical privacy shutter or slider that many laptops and external cameras have. Then close any other app that might be holding the camera — Zoom, Teams, Skype, and OBS all keep it locked while running. If the preview is still black, check that the browser is allowed to use the camera in your operating system's privacy settings.
- Why do the reported and measured frame rates differ?
- The reported value is what the camera driver claims it can do. The measured value counts frames the browser actually painted over the last second or so. Poor lighting is the usual reason for a gap: most webcams lengthen their exposure time in dim rooms, which halves the frame rate to around 15 fps. Turn on a lamp and the measured number usually climbs back up.
- Can I choose which camera to test?
- The test uses the camera your browser treats as the default. To switch between a built-in and an external camera, open the browser's site permissions (the padlock icon near the address bar), pick the camera you want, and reload the page.
- What resolution should my webcam show?
- The test requests 1920 × 1080 and falls back to whatever the camera supports. Most built-in laptop cameras top out at 1280 × 720 (HD 720p), which is plenty for video calls. External cameras often reach Full HD 1080p or higher.
- Does the test work on phones and tablets?
- Yes. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile. On a phone, the browser normally starts with the front-facing camera. The page must be served over HTTPS for camera access to work, which belun.app always is.
