How it works
- 1 Start the test Click 'Start mic test' and allow microphone access when the browser asks. The permission prompt appears near the address bar.
- 2 Speak and watch the meter Talk at your normal volume. The meter should move into the green range and the waveform should ripple as you speak. If nothing moves, check the troubleshooting tips in the FAQ.
- 3 Record and play back a clip Press 'Record 5s clip', speak for five seconds, then play it back to hear exactly what your microphone picks up — including echo, noise, or distortion.
Your data stays private
All processing happens entirely in your browser. No files, text, or data are ever sent to our servers. You can disconnect from the internet and this tool will still work.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my voice uploaded or stored anywhere?
- No. The audio stream is analyzed entirely inside your browser, and the recorded clip lives only in your browser's memory. Nothing is sent to any server, and closing the tab discards everything.
- The meter shows no signal — what should I check?
- First check the physical mute switch on your headset or microphone. Then make sure the right input device is selected in your operating system's sound settings, and that input volume is not set to zero. On Windows, also check that microphone access is enabled in Privacy settings; on macOS, in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Why does the browser ask for permission?
- Browsers require explicit permission before any page can use the microphone — this is a core privacy protection. If you accidentally clicked Block, click the padlock or settings icon near the address bar and set the microphone permission back to Allow, then reload.
- What does the dBFS number mean?
- dBFS is decibels relative to full scale — the loudest level digital audio can represent. 0 dBFS is the ceiling; quieter sounds are negative. Normal speech usually lands between −30 and −12 dBFS. Values persistently near 0 mean the signal is clipping.
- What is clipping and how do I fix it?
- Clipping happens when the signal hits the digital ceiling and the tops of the waveform are cut off, which sounds harsh and distorted. Lower the input volume (gain) in your system's sound settings or move slightly further from the microphone.
- Which browsers does the test work in?
- All modern browsers — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari, on desktop and mobile. The page must be served over HTTPS for microphone access to work, which belun.app always is.
