Paste text from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini and get a copy without the formatting fingerprints. Em dashes become commas or hyphens, curly quotes go straight, and the invisible characters that survive every copy-paste — zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces, soft hyphens — get removed. Each fix is counted, so you can see what the model actually left behind.

How it works

  1. 1
Paste the text Drop the text into the left box. Cleaning runs as you type — there is no button to press and nothing is uploaded.
  2. 2
Choose how dashes are handled Pick what an em dash becomes: a comma, a spaced hyphen, or a plain space. Number ranges like 10–20 always collapse to a hyphen, and a dash that opens a line is left alone because that is dialogue punctuation.
  3. 3
Copy the clean version The result appears on the right with a count of every marker found and fixed. Copy it to the clipboard or download it as a .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

Why do people want to remove em dashes?
The em dash became the most recognisable fingerprint of AI-written text in 2024–2025. Language models use it several times per paragraph, where most people reach for a comma or a period. Swapping the dashes out is the single fastest way to make a draft read like it was typed by a person rather than generated.
What should an em dash be replaced with?
A comma works in most sentences, because that is usually what the dash is standing in for. Use a spaced hyphen ( - ) for plain-text contexts like email signatures and code comments, or a plain space when the dash was only separating two clauses that read fine as one. There is no universally correct answer, so the tool lets you switch and compare.
Does it break dialogue dashes and number ranges?
No, and this is where most find-and-replace attempts go wrong. A dash at the start of a line is dialogue punctuation in Russian, French, and Spanish, so it stays. A dash between two digits is a range, so 1990—2000 becomes 1990-2000 rather than a comma that would change the meaning.
What happens to the curly quotes?
By default they become straight typewriter quotes, which is what plain text, code, and most CMS fields expect. If you write in Russian, French, or German, switch the quote mode to guillemets and every pair turns into «this». The opening or closing half is picked from the surrounding characters, so a single stray quote earlier in the text does not flip all the pairs after it.
What are zero-width and non-breaking characters doing in my text?
They arrive through the clipboard. Chat interfaces render text in HTML, so copying it brings along non-breaking spaces (U+00A0), narrow no-break spaces, soft hyphens, and sometimes zero-width spaces (U+200B). They look like nothing at all but break search, sorting, CSV imports, and string comparison — and some AI-detection tools treat them as a signal.
Will this make my text undetectable by AI detectors?
No, and nothing honestly can. Detectors score word choice, sentence rhythm, and predictability, not punctuation. Cleaning the formatting removes the obvious visual tells; the writing itself still needs editing. Treat this as a typography pass, not a disguise.
Can I strip the Markdown bold and the emoji too?
Yes. Turn on the two optional rules: Markdown markers (**like this** and _this_) are removed while the words stay, and emoji are deleted. Copyright, registered, and trademark signs are kept, since Unicode classifies them as pictographs but nobody wants them gone.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything runs in JavaScript on this page, which matters here more than usual — drafts, client work, and unpublished writing never leave your browser.
