Race Pace Math: Splits, Conversions, and Common Mistakes
How to work out the pace you need for a target finish time, convert min/km to min/mile, and use a split chart so the second half doesn't fall apart.
Here’s a fact that surprises a lot of first-time marathoners: a 2-hour half marathon and a 4-hour marathon are exactly the same pace — 5:41 per kilometre. The marathon is precisely twice the half (42.195 km vs 21.0975 km), so the math lines up. What doesn’t line up is how those two races feel after 90 minutes.
Pace math itself is short: pace equals time divided by distance. Everything else is knowing which numbers to plug in, and where the rounding errors hide.
The three-variable triangle
Distance, time, pace. Know two, and the third falls out:
- Pace = time ÷ distance. 55 minutes over 10 km is 5:30 min/km.
- Time = pace × distance. 5:30 min/km over a half marathon is 1:56:02.
- Distance = time ÷ pace. An hour at 5:30 min/km covers 10.9 km.

I’ve watched people do that conversion wrong mid-run more than once; dividing 60 by a number while running tempo is harder than it sounds.
42.195, not 42
Race distances have awkward decimals, and they matter. Plan a 4-hour marathon against a rounded 42 km and you get 5:43 per kilometre. The real distance demands 5:41. Two seconds per kilometre sounds like nothing until you multiply it out: that’s about 84 seconds across the race. If you run 5:43s all day, you cross the line at 4:01:24 wondering where your sub-4 went.
The same trap exists in miles. A 10-minute mile is not a 6-minute kilometre — it’s 6:13. The conversion factor is 1.609, and mental shortcuts drift badly at the margins.
There’s a second version of this error that has nothing to do with arithmetic: your GPS watch will almost always read long. Certified courses are measured along the shortest possible line, and nobody runs that line perfectly. Measure a marathon at 42.6 km on your wrist and your watch pace was slower than your official pace. Plan with the certified distance, not last year’s GPS file.
What a split chart is actually for
A split chart lists your cumulative time at every kilometre or mile marker. For a 50-minute 10K at even pace: 5:00 at 1 km, 25:00 at 5 km, 45:00 at 9 km. Write the key numbers on your arm or memorise a few checkpoints.
The point isn’t decoration. Most recreational racers go out too fast — the first kilometres feel free, adrenaline covers the cost, and the bill arrives around 30 km in a marathon. A split chart turns “I feel fine” into “I’m 40 seconds ahead of a schedule I chose while calm.” Nearly every road world record of the past decade, including Kipchoge’s 2:01:09 in Berlin, was run with an even or slightly negative split — the second half as fast as the first, or faster. Amateurs can’t buy that fitness, but the pacing discipline is free.
Practical checklist
- Set the target from the certified race distance (use the 5K/10K/half/marathon presets, not round numbers).
- Check the pace in both min/km and min/mile if the race uses mile markers.
- Generate splits and memorise three checkpoints: early, halfway, and where it gets hard.
- On race morning, resist banking time. It carries interest.
